Etching on Somerset, 22 x 30"
Laura Cleary was born and raised in the hills of Chattanooga, TN.
She makes prints, drawings, and videos about the process of struggle. Taking the inherent limitations of abstract imagery, Ms. Cleary links both scientific and absurd phrases with abstract forms. Ms. Cleary received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from Tufts University in affiliation with the Museum School of Boston, as well as her Masters of Fine Art in Printmaking from Savannah College of Art and Design, Atlanta.
Laura Cleary is the co-owner, manager, Master Printer and etching specialist for Atlanta based publishing and contract printshop, Straw Hat Press. In addition to her print work, she also creates drawings, paintings, and videos and has been featured in several local emerging artist shows while also showing in national exhibitions.
Statement: A line is a simple and complex instrument. It is the divider between two planes, the link between two points in space. A line is as
mathematical as it is visceral. Line is balance and struggle. It is the most basic building block of written language and Art. Line is the guide to understanding my work.
A?My work is about the process of struggle. Each of the mediums I employ in my work is effective because it is simultaneously resistant and malleable. The inherent obstacles of a medium create problems for me to overcome even as the copper, paper or lens becomes a record of my every movement. I seek out the tension between binaries. It is through this tension that new and unexpected aspects of an object or idea are frequently uncovered. I link together experiences of intense emotion with a line and codes in which I systematically catalogue and often arbitrarily respond to problems that I imagine exist within the image. It is a process that is never fixed in time or space, but rather continues to flow and evolve.
