Item Description
"Cottages on Star Island" is a framed 10" x 12" oil on linen mounted on panel by artist Christopher Volpe of Hollis, New Hampshire.
Artist Statement:
"Painting for me is a three-way conversation between sheer joy in the medium, the challenge of seeing and responding to the world in a fresh, spontaneous way, and the history and traditions of western art.
I moved to New England from Long Island, New York to earn a graduate degree in poetry at the University of New Hampshire. I wrote poetry, worked for about 15 years as a professional writer, and taught college English before falling in love with American landscape painting while teaching a class in art history.
My work draws upon 19th century traditions such as Barbizon and Tonalism yet extends to abstraction through a contemporary sensibility. My paintings are exhibited and sold through regional galleries and juried shows.
I teach the history of art as an adjunct faculty member at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. I live in Hollis, NH with my wife Anna Birch and our five-year-old son, Max.
Read a feature on my work in artscope magazine."
