Item Description
A guided paddle up the historic and infamous Newtown Creek, the aquatic border between Brooklyn and Queens and the birthplace of heavy industry in America.
A tributary of the East River, the Newtown Creek has been called the waterway of the Industrial Revolution and was the location, over the years, of Indian encampments (because of the abundant oysters, fishing and marsh grasses), the U.S.'s first oil refinery, the center of rope manufacturing, sugar refining and now a Federal clean-up. This is a very rare opportunity to see a little-known area of the city from the water.
Tour departs from Manhattan Avenue Street End Park, Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Led by a Lab parent.
