Item Description
"Get Slapped if You Lookin' Ho 1" is an archival inkjet print from Melissa Haimowitz.
In the photographs "Get Slapped if You Lookin’ Ho 1 and 2," Haimowitz references Nicki Minaj’s song and accompanying music video Super Bass. Mimicking the singer’s aesthetic Haimowitz presents a woman that is meant to be objectified by the viewer. In the lyrics of Super Bass, Minaj sings “get slapped if you lookin’ ho” perpetuating the idea that women dressed in a certain manner consent to demeaning titles (i.e. hoe) and violent sexual acts.
About the Artist:
Melissa Eve Haimowitz, born and raised in New Jersey, currently works in Bloomfield Hills, MI. In 2009 she received a B.A. in Art and Art History from Dickinson College. Haimowitz will receive her M.F.A. in Photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art Spring of 2013. Haimowitz’s work uses pop culture references to reveal how our we foster a society that objectifies women and perpetuate the myth that women are to blame for their own victimization with regard to sexual harassment and abuse.
