Item Description
Photographer Frank Bruynbroek’s book COMPAWSSION has recently been featured on The Ellen Show, Good Morning America, Entertainment Tonight and US Weekly. COMPAWSSION is a homage to dogs that have been rescued from the streets, from shelters, and often from having been euthanized. The photographs are portraits of what it means to be a dog and in particular what it means to be a dog that has been abandoned, and then rescued. Mr. Bruynbroek's proceeds go directly to no kill rescue shelters, rescue foundations, or service dog foundations.
The book features interviews Frank has done with a variety of influential people from all different communities (music, sports, politics, film TV, etc.). They talk about what it has meant to them to rescue a dog and why. The interviews are poignant and inspiring stories of how dogs have made an impact on their lives. No humans appear in the photographs. Some of the high profile people interviewed for the book include: Dr. Jane Goodall, Ellen degeneration, Diane Keaton, Katherine Heigl, Tony La Russa, Jackie Chan, Emmylou Harris, Cesar Millan, Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed, Greg Biffle, Richard Donner and Lauren Shuler Donner, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, Brigitte Bardot, Josh Duhamel, Tamar Geller, William Wegman, Ryan Murphy, T. Boon and Madeleine Pickens and Marg Helgenberger.
Frank Bruynbroek grew up in Brussels, Belgium with a desire to work with children as an elementary school teacher. His mother was a housewife, his father a Plexiglas sign designer whose discontentment with workaday life and ongoing artistic frustration became increasingly evident to his son. Bruynbroek truly believes his passion for black and white imagery was inspired by his father, who would retreat into a back room and create stark, haunting, black and white paintings. “With black and white, you have no ‘miss’ factor,” he says. “There’s no distraction. Everything is stripped down to its essence.”
