The 1937 autobiography of the first U. S. Lighthouse Commissioner, from his early days on the Mississippi River to his surveys done for the government in Alaska during the gold rush; six years in the Philippines, mapping the islands; and then the lighthouse service. Stories of buoys, lightships, lighthouses and keepers, river navigation, radio beacons, organization of personnel, etc. A classic of lighthouse literature, now hard to find.

Hardcover, first edition. 368 pages. In very good condition, except that a photo opposite the title page has been removed from the binding.
This item can be picked up at the American Lighthouse Foundation gala in Portsmouth, NH, on May 4, 2013, or it can be mailed at the expense of the high bidder.
