Item Description

Golden Key to Women's Rights National Historic Park
(5" x 1.25")
On Saturday, July 19th, the newly rehabilitated Wesleyan Chapel was rededicated.  The ceremony marked the 163rd anniversary of the First Women’s Rights Convention, which was held at the site in 1848.  Over 200 people attended the ceremony in Declaration Park, adjacent to the chapel.

The day’s events began with a procession from the Stanton House, retracing the steps of convention organizer Elizabeth Cady Stanton.  The procession was led by Melinda Grube, portraying Stanton in period dress.  To start the events at Declaration Park the musical group Hutchinson Family Revival performed a variety of 19th century reform songs on the main stage.

Formal ceremonies began at 11 a.m., presided over by Superintendent Tina Orcutt.  Other participants in the program included Congressman Richard Hanna, Northeast Region Deputy Director Mike Caldwell, and Coline Jenkins, the great-great granddaughter of Elizabeth Cady Stanton. A keynote address was delivered by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney.

Orcutt also read a letter from Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.  In the letter Clinton expressed her regret at not being able to be part of the ceremonies and her views on the importance of the Wesleyan Chapel to American history.

Following the events in Declaration Park, participants moved to the front doors of the chapel for a ribbon cutting ceremony.  The public was then invited inside to see the rehabilitated chapel and newly installed exhibits.  To conclude the festivities Melinda Grube once again portrayed Elizabeth Cady Stanton, this time while reading the Declaration of Sentiments on the spot where Stanton presented it in 1848.

This is key is a very special memorabillia from that historic event.
