Item Description

Lail Vineyards -- Five Generations of Greatness, Five Remarkable Bottles

--Five 750 ml 1997 Lail Vineyards J. Daniel Cuvee

At Lail Vineyards, our history is like our land: it anchors us in what we value most, and provides a fertile point of departure for creativity and innovation. We are proud to continue our family’s 130-year tradition of striving for the pinnacle of excellence.” – Robin Daniel Lail, Owner

Founded and led today by Robin Lail, Lail Vineyard’s history reaches back five generations to 1879 when her great granduncle Gustav Niebaum founded Inglenook Vineyards.  By the 1890’s, Niebaum and his wines had become legendary, and Inglenook was considered by many to be the finest wine producer in the country.

Inglenook passed into the hands of Niebaum’s great-nephew John Daniel, Jr.  Working closely with his friend Robert Mondavi, John Daniel Jr. was largely responsible for creating the foundation of the Napa Valley appellation as we see it today.  He believed that the wines made in Napa Valley could rival the best wines made anywhere in the world, and he played a significant role in making this vision a reality.

This is the rich history that John Daniel Jr.’s daughter Robin Lail inherited, cultivated, and is passing on to her children and grandchildren.   This is the heritage that is the basis for the passion and expertise of Lail Vineyards.

The remarkable 1997 vintage of Lail Vineyards J. Daniel Cuvee is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Merlot.  Philippe Melka was the winemaker and only 1200 cases were produced.  The dense ruby/purple-colored wine boasts a lavishly pure nose of blackberries, cassis, minerals, licorice, chocolate, and toast.  It is expansive, with the ’97 vintage's tell-tale richness, sweet tannin, and outstanding ripeness and concentration.  Completely ready to drink now, this wine should also last well into the next decade.
