Item Description

Snuggle up with this luscious woolen afghan combining four different tones of green. With its intricate design, it took approximately 100 hours for The Fanwood Library "Hook & Needle Group" to knit and crochet this lovely afghan. From moss to jade to tree leaf and framed by a beautiful crochet border of forest green, each color is lovingly knitted in an attractive variety of stitches: knit, cable, close checks and a complex type of trellis. A true celebration of the color green that will keep you warm and cozy on those cool nights at the shore, or in the fall and winter by the fireplace.

Your quiet evening at home will be even better with a good book! Two Seeing Eye Dogs Take Manhattan: A Love Story, written by Seeing Eye graduate Lloyd Burlingame, is a funny, fast-paced account of the true adventures -- and misadventures -- of one blind New Yorker and his two extraordinary Seeing Eye dogs. Hickory and Kemp, the two exceptionally stalwart heroes of this delightfully entertaining book, triumph brilliantly over the obstacles of big city life. They are the canine equivalents of the intrepid “Navy Seals.” Undaunted, they meet the challenges of the Big Apple. Dodging cars, crowds, and one emergency situation after another, they guide their partner safely to all destinations. Readers of all ages will be fascinated by these devoted canines who lavish the gifts of independence, dignity and freedom on their human partner.

About the Hook & Needle Group:

Seven years ago, a small group of women who visited the
Fanwood Memorial Library on a regular basis decided to get together to do something for their community. They loved to knit and crochet, and had run out of projects they could do for their home, friends and family. The time had come to focus on something else.

They decided that they would meet once a week at the library to knit and crochet together. They would donate their work to various charitable causes in the area.

Since then, the group has grown to more than a dozen members. They have taught one another how to knit, crochet, or improve their techniques. More to the point, they have turned this into a veritable community workshop. Every single afghan, shawl, baby toy and knit liner for a helmet are given to a specific charity that they identify. They buy the yarn, knit and crochet for hundreds of hours and derive absolutely no income from this selfless venture. But they receive the best gift of all: knowing that their artwork helps an elderly or a homeless person feel warm, a soldier feel more protected by the liner in his helmet, a baby to play with a soft and cuddly toy. They simply smile back and keep on knitting out of love for others.

This year, the “Hook and Needle Group” prepared three large Afghans
for The Seeing Eye Auction, and also donated several adorable and huggable baby toys.

Enjoy their art for the comfort it will provide, and remember that it came from women with big hearts who love to help those around them. From the Hook and Needle group directly to you!
