Chateau Montelena -- A Wealth of History

Chateau Montelena’s  rich history began on a chilly fall morning in 1882 when Alfred L. Tubbs spaded over and inspected the soil where he thought of planting estate vineyards. He'd heard the Napa Valley was the best place to grow grapes in California, and soon after he was the proud owner of 254 acres of rugged land just two miles north of Calistoga at the base of Mount Saint Helena. 

Fast forward to May, 1976:  Less than 100 years later, a 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay was one of two Napa Valley wines that won the famous Paris Tasting, putting California at the forefront of the wine world.

With these two great historical moments in its background, the National Park Service named Chateau Montelena to the National Register of Historic Places in February, 2013. This recognition tells the history of California and Napa Valley winemaking, and is a little bit about Napa Valley being recognized as a global leader in making quality wine.

Today, Chateau Montelena continues to produce some of the finest wines in California.  Come and visit a setting which is one of the most peaceful in the Napa Valley -- a stone castle carved into a hillside overlooking a Chinese garden -- with vineyards reaching out to the base of Mt. St. Helena.
