Ed Urbanski, Manager of Operations and Secretary of Prairie Dog Pals will be your field guide. Ed will share his prairie dog expertise and vast knowledge about prairie dog history, biology, local lore, and many, many amazing facts about the species. A GREAT day in the Land of Enchantment custom tailored to YOU and your interest in this unique but beleaguered icon of the west.

Ed Urbanski has worked with Prairie Dog Pals for over 10 years, first as a volunteer, then a board member, afterwards responsible for rescue and organizational operations, and now, most anything else out of the ordinary.

An engineer by education and experience, he uses his organizational skills and goal orientation to help this icon of the West, the prairie dog.  Faced with the undeniable fact that prairie dogs have decreased in population in range by over 98% over the past 110 years, he chose to do something about it.

When asked, “Well how did you get involved”, he replies that he saw a need and filled it.  Prairie dogs were being poisoned, bulldozed, and otherwise extirpated throughout the city and state.  More specifically when asked by city administration, if we don’t poison will you help relocate, he said ABSOLUTELY!  With the long-term vision of Prairie Dog Pals founder Liz Green, and President Yvonne Boudreaux, he developed an alternative to killing that has resulted in the rescue and relocation of over 10,000 Gunnison’s prairie dogs over the past 10 years.

While not a biologist, he is an animal lover and has rescued raccoons, badgers, birds, squirrels, rats, cats  (and one pocket gopher) in addition to the prairie dogs.  Both he and Yvonne have received recognition from Animal Protection New Mexico, New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, and the Prairie Coalition of the Humane Society of the United States.

He may not know every answer about prairie dogs but has a deep love for the species and commitment to their continued survival in their native-lands.

Prairie Dog Pals of Albuquerque, New Mexico has been helping to care for prairie dogs in the city. To ensure their survival we provide supplemental feeding in barren areas. We also capture and relocate prairie dogs where loss of habitat or human conflict threatens their existence.

OUR GOALS ARE:

  • To preserve appropriate areas of land for prairie dogs naturally existing in the Greater Albuquerque Area.
  • To have all counties with naturally existing prairie dogs preserve areas of natural habitat for them.
  • To have public lands which are leased to allow prairie dogs and other native wildlife to co-exist with humans and domestic animals.
