Author and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright

Award-winning playwright and author Tony Kushner is front and center this year with his Academy Award nomination for best screenplay with the hugely praised Lincoln. No stranger to awards, however, the native New Yorker, who spent his formative years in Louisiana, has wowed America for years with hard-hitting, politically charged theater and well-reviewed movies.

In the early 1990s, his epic, seven-hour, two-part Broadway blockbuster, Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, earned him a Pulitzer Prize, two Tony Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, the Evening Standard Award, two Olivier Award Nominations, the New York Critics Circle Award, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, and the LAMBDA Liberty Award for Drama. That, however, was only the beginning.

In addition to his stage work, Tony Kushner wrote the screenplays for Steven Spielberg’s movie Munich, and for Mike Nichols’ film Angels in America; has translated and adapted the work of others, including Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Person of Sezuan and Mother Courage and Her Children and collaborated with the late Maurice Sendak, noted children’s author and illustrator.

Tony Kushner graduated from Columbia University with a bachelor’s degree in medieval studies and continued his graduate education in acting at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He holds honorary doctorates from Purchase College, State University of New York; City University of New York's John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Brandeis University.
