Item Description
“Rainbow trout gyotaku artwork by Richie Gudzan (signed limited-edition print. Size ~8”H X 12”W, unframed).
Gyotaku" (gee-oh-tah-koo), meaning "fish rubbing" in Japanese, is a printmaking technique dating back to before cameras were available to document a bragging-size catch. Traditionally, sumi ink was applied directly to the actual fish, rice paper was gently laid on top, and the result was a life-size impression of the trophy – including all the scales and fins. The artist then painted the eyes and signed / stamped the finished piece. The best part: the fish could still be cleaned and eaten!
As an obsessive fly fisherman and artist, Richie Gudzan has taken the gyotaku technique a little further; replacing traditional single-color sumi ink prints with the vivid, lifelike color palette that makes fish such beautiful creatures. The artwork is a great way to commemorate time spent on the water, and the printed fish are still cleaned, cooked and eaten – so the catch is never wasted.” http://thepaddleout.com
