Item Description

Described as a game-changer in the field of paleoclimatology, Bank Street parent Dr. Brad Linsley is a Professor and Director of the Stable Isotope Laboratory at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, part of Columbia University's world-renown Earth Institute. Join Brad for a tour of the observatory and glimpse into the science of global climate change studies. Brad is one part Indiana Jones and two parts mad scientist, as he reconstructs pre-instrumental climate records by analyzing and deciphering geochemical clues locked in tropical corals skeletons and deep sea sediments. These records are critical to unraveling the anthropogenic and natural variability in climate change patterns.

The tour is best for a small group and can be appropriately tailored to your interests, age, and time frame. To be held at a mutually convenient time and day. Open to any age but may be more interesting for 9/10s and older, or those who have an understanding of basic science. About Columbia Universitys Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory: Lamont-Doherty is a core component of the Earth Institute, Columbia University, which brings together people and tools to address some of the worlds most challenging problems from climate change and environmental degradation, to poverty, disease and the sustainable use of resources. Lamont-Doherty also operates a federally-funded research ship, the Marcus G. Langseth, which uses seismic data to map the sub-seafloor, highlighting hidden faults and other earthquake hazards.
