Item Description
Matted watercolor painting that measures 10" x 8"
"Dancing on Mother Earth" represents a pow wow dancer in buckshin, the ideal of a woman in her culture; dancing with dignity and calm balance, pride and strength. Her regailia is typical of the Oklahoma tribes.
Monica is originally from Toyei, Arizona and grew up on the Navajo Reservation through high school. She met her husband Arthur at UNM while she was studying nursing. She has always been interested in different cultures and tribes and currently lives at Isleta Pueblo which is where Arthur is from. They are both big fans of the Singing Wire on KUNM on Sundays from 12-4 pm.
She started watercoloring about two years ago. Her father is also a painter and gave her her first water colors when he switched to working in oils. She experimented with them and found her own way. She is inspired by her mother and her culture. Her grandparents on her dad's side were very traditional. Her grandmother was a weaver who spoke almost exclusively Navaho. Her mom died last year and was someone who was a dual language speaker and single mother. Monica describes her as a woman who lived in two worlds - knowledgeable and supportive of her culture while valuing the importance of education and living in the modern world at the same time. Monica is also walking this challenging path.
Along with water color painting, Monica also does beadwork with her husband Arthur both on a loom and directly onto material as seen in one of the photographs here. Together they create beadwork pieces for ceremonial items and special orders including medicine bags, aprons, boguards, bracelets and armbands. They can be reached at (505)869-6764 for more information.
