Item Description
Retablos remain a fundamental aspect of New Mexican folk art by mixing the Catholic church art foundation and modern decorative purposes. Retablos incorporate religious iconography and devotional images for a shrine like setting.
This particular retablo by Marissa Garcia documents "The Veil of Veronica", the Catholic legend that when Saint Veronica wiped blood and sweat off of the face of Jesus as he made his way to the crucifixion with her veil, his image appeared on the cloth. This piece differs from usual depictions because the face of Jesus appears three times on the cloth, rather than once.
The pine retablo is painted with natural pigments and a pinon sap varnish. The back side features a special description of the "Veil of Veronica". It is signed and dated 2009 by the artist.
Marissa Garcia is an award winning artist at the annual Spanish Market in Santa Fe.
Measures 31" x 15"
