Preston, L. Preston Red (2009)
2009 marks ten years since the first bottling of this Syrah based Rhone blend and it marks the first year using Grenache in the blend. While only making up 5% of the total, the Grenache adds structure and notes of raspberry and licorice in the nose. 2009 was a medium-long growing season with an up tick of heat toward the end which the Rhone varietals really favor. Harvest for the varietals in this bottling took place from late September to mid-October and the wine was blended in January of 2010. This is a well focused wine with aromas of black cherry, cedar, licorice and pepper with an almond element that lies just below the surface. Showing some youthful tannin upon release, the 2009 will reward the patient oenophile when cellared for 5-7 years.
