Item Description

Harvey Buchalter is a gifted artist, UNM graduate (MA'72 in Spanish and Portuguese) and former lecturer in Yiddish for the UNM German Department who listens to KUNM in the mornings. His work, consisting of wood and stone sculpture, as well as relief sculpture and unique Judaica has appeared in many shows and exhibits.

Harvey is offering a full day (approximately 4 hours) sculpture lesson at his studio in the Old Country Club section of Albuquerque.  You will have the opportunity to work with wood and stone, using chisels, power tools, wood turning lathe, finishing techniques and be offered tips for selling your product if you like.

Take a look at some of the photos above:

-The first is Cosmos.  A careful look will reveal the phases of the moon.  It's sculpted in native alabaster from the Jemez Pueblo area.  The finish is hand-rubbed tin oxide.  The patina is exceptionally smooth and bright

-Next is a Menorah, which spells out the five letters of Chanukkah in Hebrew script. Koa wood on Koa base with solid brass candle holders.

-A wooden bowl. The forest fires that sometimes destroy cottonwood growth along the banks of the Rio Grande provide a source for re-claimed wood which Harvey turns into bowls and platters.  The pattern results from the extreme heat of a flash fire.

- And, the artist himself in his kitchen.

A full day in the studio with Harvey Buchalter can be yours if you're the highest bidder.
