The Albuquerque Museum of Art also includes the historic Casa San Ysidro: The Gutiérrez-Minge House, located in the village of Corrales, just north of Albuquerque. This original Greek revival home, built by the Gutiérrez family in the 1870s, includes Alan and Shirley Minge's recreation of a 19th century rancho, complete with a small family chapel, a central plazuela and an enclosed corral.

Carol Kennis Lopez brings more than twenty years of  experience working in museums and historic sites to her role of site manager for Casa San Ysidro: The Gutiérrez /Minge House. Originally from Colorado where she served at several museums most notably the Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site and the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museumm Carol  has embraced her new community in New Mexico. Besides being a member of KUNM, her memberships include the Albuquerque BioPark, the Albuquerque Museum Foundation, and the Historical Society of New Mexico. Her academic focus of agricultural history has led her to an appreciation and some first-hand experience with modern as well as historic farming and ranching practices. She loves working in the Village of Corrales and preserving and sharing New Mexico’s rich agricutlrual and artistic traditions with the community.

Heritage Day Offers Fun Family Activities

19th Century Lifestyle on Display at Casa San Ysidro Museum Event

Corrales, New Mexico-Inside the adobe walls of Casa San Ysidro the colors, traditions and music of historic New Mexico spring to life in this free family-oriented event. On Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. visitors may talk with a traditional blacksmith as he works the forge, watch a bread baking demonstration in the adobe horno, and see how generations of New Mexicans spun wool from churro and other sheep. A traditional Arts Mercado will feature well known artists Charlie Carrillo, Oscar and Bernandette Caraveo, Jimmy Trujillo, Jerry Montoya and Robert and Viola Chavez.

Fun performances include Loren Kahn’s Puppet Theatre production of Floppo, the Spanish Frog Prince at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and traditional New Mexican music by Frank McCulloch y sus Amigos at 3 p.m.

At Noon and 2 p.m. Ron and Pat Rundstrom and their burros will demonstrate how to pack these hardy critters as the early pioneers and prospectors did. Throughout the day visitors may explore the Museum to see how New Mexican families lived long ago.
