Item Special Note

2010 Mays Canyon, Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

Mays Canyon is one of our most dense and structured Pinot Noirs.  This can be attributed to the exposition of the vineyard and the shallow, well-drained gravel soils.  Just south of the river town of Guerneville, the vineyard itself is skirted by redwoods along steep canyon hillsides laden with fog.  Plums, blackberry, Morello cherry, hints of both whole cluster (green, medicinal notes) and bacon fat dominate the nose. Aromas of grilled meats, black tea, and bitter chocolate add complexity.  This is an incredibly compelling wine that, while enjoyable now, rewards patience.

2010 Roman Vineyard, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

We farm Roman biodynamically, using compost from our Gold Ridge Estate.  Given its extreme coastal hillside exposition above the fog line, it will traditionally resemble Hirsch’s “iron fist in the velvet glove.”  However, the 2010 has turned out to be more feminine and refined.  The 2010 vintage features fresh cherries and cherry liqueur accented with beautifully delineated earthy, woodsy notes, with rose petal, red hot candies, potpourri, fresh leather, and camphor.  Once again, a long finish.  With time in bottle, this has become a show-stopper!  The defined flavors and integrated tannins make this one for early enjoyment.

2010 The Haven Vineyard, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

The Haven is our original Estate vineyard.  Planted in 2001, The Haven is a microcosm of the diversity of soils within the Sonoma Coast, containing uplifted undersea volcanics, sandstones, shales and loams.  This translates into the glass as unparalleled complexity and for this reason we believe The Haven will become known as one of the greatest vineyards in the North Coast.  It has a very exotic and complex bouquet of wild strawberries, cranberry, and plums with pepper, vanilla bean, violets, clove, cardamom, sarsaparilla, sage, lavender, and even beeswax. The palate is very rich and plush with lively acidity and firm yet integrated tannins.  This wine is all about precision and finesse, but no one would claim it lacks authority.
