Item Description

Bonsai Plate by Janel Clark

True Porcelain: Kaolin, Silica, and Feldspar, no ball clay
Cone 10, 6.75" diameter, 1.5" high, hand thrown on the potter's wheel, Arita, Japan Porcelain Process
University of New Mexico Student of Kathryn Cyman

My name is Janel Clark. I am a graduate of the University of New Mexico.  I began working with clay in high school, at La Cueva under the direction of Jin Yoshida. I have continued pursuing my passion for porcelain throughout college at UNM, and after graduation under the direction of Kathryn Cyman. Porcelain has always captured my attention because if its purity and difficulty to work with as a medium. It is always a challenge. This makes it more rewarding when a piece is successful from the wheel all the way through the final glaze firing. It is a long process to make ceramics using the Arita method, but the reward is well worth every step. Plates are an excellent surface to carve and paint, which brings more depth to the work. I draw my inspiration from a trip I took to China in high school, and the forms I saw while there.  The cumulative inspiration from China, my classmates, and fellow potters is what I use to create my own unique works.
