Item Description

"Sweet!" Jar Retablo by Kenny Chavez is made of recycled coffee and lard tin cans and a cold cream jar mounted on wood with wire.

Kenny Chavezis an Albuquerque recycle folk artist. His long-time store, In Crowd, (1984 to 2003) along Nob Hill's Central Avenue retail strip, stirred the pot of creativity for the Albuquerque arts community for many years.

Today that retail space is now called Masks Y Mas where he shows his work and helps manage the store as well.

You can find Kenny at Masks Y Mas, 3106 Central SE, ABQ, NM, Monday thru Friday from 11 to 6 pm.

Artist’s Statement:

"I wanted to make something with my hands, to use raw materials that cost close to nothing. So, seven years ago I got into the habit of going out to the land (anywhere) and salvaging rusted bottlecaps, old cans, bottles, photos, bailing wire, and weathered barn-wood." These are what I now call my "Retablos." Traditionally, a retablo is a  wall hanging that is for a special place in your home for devotional or non-devotional inspiration.

2012, and my creative energy is in full swing. I'm planning an exhibit of my work at Mask Y Mas this March 18th thru April 15th in honor of Earth Day celebration, as well as gearing up for the annual Cinco de Mayo Folk Art Fest May 7th at La Parada Mercantile in the luscious north valley.

This year marks the 25th anniversary for the Contemporary Hispanic Market.
(Spanish Market Event.) In honor of this, a new book will be released at this summer's Market and I'll be in it. I'll also be traveling the Mid-West early summer making an annual trek searching for incredible finds for my artwork.

In the Fall I'll be involved in plenty of Day of the Dead art showings and attending the annual Heard Museum Spanish Market in Pheonix, Arizona.

I hope you continue to enjoy my work as I evolve into the new and exciting decade.”

Gracias Amigos,
Kenny
