Herblock: 12/31/2000 "The Year According to Herblock" The Washington Post, p. B8
- Item Number
- 104
Item Description
A rare replica press plate of Herblock's "Year According to Herblock" that ran in The Washington Post. The array includes 19 cartoons: blue ink on metal. Dimensions: 12.75" x 23.25" for plate. Individual cartoons on perimeter are 3.75" x 2.375"; six cartoons below headline are 5" x 3.5".
While the nation has not seen anything like Bush v Gore or the Elian Gonzolez case since 2000, several themes Herblock explored remind us that the more things change, the more they remain the same.
Subjects include: abortion ("Forward to the Past"); gays in the military versus gays in the Boy Scouts; 2000 Dem Primary (Bradley, Gore); presidential election (viewers "nostalgic for Clinton already"); attitude toward guns (not flag burning-only gunsmoke), Wall Street Bear scares Bull; Supreme Court: Erie v. Pap (SCOTUS decided nudity is not inherently free expression, so local laws apply), Bush environmental record in Texas; two cartoons on Elian Gonzalez; discomfort of air passengers; Middle East Peace; campaign finance (disclosure of secret funds); two cartoons on waiting for election results; three cartoons on SCOTUS credibility and Bush v. Gore case.
