Item Description

This collector's item is an Egyptian Cat by Austin Sculpture Productions (©1965). The sculpture, including the base, is approx. 12 inches high and 6-1/4 by 4 inches at the base. The sculpture weights 4-1/2 pounds. The base is black. The sculpture was made in Mexico, but Austin Productions has ceased making sculptures, so this item is truly collectible.

Among the many deities worshipped by the ancient Egyptians, one of the most revered was Bast or Bastet, Goddess of Joy.  Her representative, the cat, became a popular symbol of good luck and happiness.  The goddess’s shrine at Bubastis, Lower Egypt, was adorned with works of art by Egypt’s finest artists.  An example of their inspired work is this reproduction of a temple piece which dates from 663-525 B.C.  Stylized yet realistic, this lovely sculpture features a rich verdi bronze patina.

For over thirty years, Austin Sculpture Productions has been creating the sculptural treasures that enrich the world around us - from the primitive forms of Africa, through the ornamental and contemplative Oriental sculpture, to the contemporary works of the present.  There are over 500 distinctive pieces in the Austin Sculpture Collection, each with a history as unique as the sculpture itself.
