Item Description
This large and dramatically figured bowl was handmade using a lathe by master wood turner Lou Pignolet, from a big leaf maple burl obtained from friends. The burl came from the west coast, probably Oregon. The bowl measures about 12.5 inches in diameter and 6.5 inches high. The wall thickness is 3/8 inch. The bowl has beautiful grain figuring and a complete natural bark edge. Big leaf maple burls are highly prized by furniture makers and wood turners, and this bowl clearly shows why. The bowl has amazing flame (curly) figuring and cascades of tiny eyes. One can see all kinds of interesting images in this patterning. The shape of the bowl followed the outer contour of the burl, with a goal of incorporating the natural bark edge of the burl. The best figuring is usually found closest to the outer gnarly part of the burl. This bowl is a collector’s piece and for a person who really loves the beauty and feel of wood. This bowl would set the mood of an entire room. The Pignolets have had it on their dining room table, and it is the center of focus in the room. Although the natural tung oil/beeswax-mineral oil finish is food safe, this bowl is best used as an artistic piece.
This bowl is shown on Lou’s website, www.loupignoletbowls.com, with additional images and a more complete description. The website also includes information on turning a burl into a bowl. Lou is also offering a private wood turning experience in this auction for anyone wanting to learn how to turn a burl into a bowl.
