Item Description
Lunch or Dinner with Dr. Debra Canabal — Shark Conservationist — in Belleville, New Jersey.
Debra Canabal earned her Ph.D. in Biomedical Science with a concentration in neuroscience at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She did her thesis work on neuronal control of glucose homeostasis and how it is altered in Diabetes.
She was also a recipient of a National Science Foundation grant in which she facilitated the science curriculum for inner city school systems. After completing her Ph.D. she became an animal nutritionist for large and small pharmaceutical companies.
During graduate school, she went on her first shark dive in the Bay Islands of Honduras. She immediately developed a passion for sharks and in 2009 she joined the Shark Diver Magazine team as a staff photographer.
As Debra's love for sharks deepened, she focused her efforts on their preservation and joined SRI as Director of Development. When not working at SRI, she is often diving with oceanic whitetip sharks. Debra believes research and education will lead to the conservation of sharks, and hopes to inspire a new outlook on sharks and their need for their protection.

Item Special Note
Being auctioned is dinner or lunch with one the world’s foremost shark experts or celebrities. It is a unique opportunity to “talk shark” face-to-face, one-on-one, with a real authority on sharks.
How it works:
1. Bid on a celebrity, shark scientist or conservationist that lives or works in your area, unless you are willing to drive or fly to meet them in their area.
2. The winning bidder pays for the lunch or dinner and may bring as many guests as he or she wishes.
3. We will introduce the winning bidder to the celebrity, scientist or conservationist. The two of you then set a mutually agreeable date, time and place to meet within one year of the close of the auction.
All winning bids are charitable contributions deductible from US Federal 2013 income taxes. Funds raised by the auction will be used to support shark research and conservation programs.
