Alex Hofford, born and raised in Cambridge and educated in London, is currently based in Hong Kong. He has lived there for more than a decade, using the city as a base to cover stories in China and the region. Much of his work focuses on environmental issues.
Since establishing his company in Hong Kong in 1998, Alex has carried out many editorial assignments in the region, having worked mainly in Asia, but also in the Middle East and Africa. He covered the Sichuan earthquake and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games for the European Pressphoto Agency (EPA).
He recently spent four months in the Pacific Ocean for Greenpeace International covering the problems of marine plastic pollution, shark finning, over-fishing and illegal coastal development. He is currently working on toxic e-waste, air pollution and solar power issues in China.
In Japan, Alex uncovered a massive industrial shark finning factory in the northern fishing port of Kesen-numa and elsewhere, photos of which appear in the book Man and Shark which Alex co-authored with Paul Hilton. The book shows the beauty and majesty of sharks and the brutality and horror of shark finning.

1. Bid on a celebrity, shark scientist or conservationist that lives or works in your area, unless you are willing to drive or fly to meet them in their area.
2. The winning bidder pays for the lunch or dinner and may bring as many guests as he or she wishes.
3. We will introduce the winning bidder to the celebrity, scientist or conservationist. The two of you then set a mutually agreeable date, time and place to meet within one year of the close of the auction.
All winning bids are charitable contributions deductible from US Federal 2013 income taxes. Funds raised by the auction will be used to support shark research and conservation programs.
