Item Description

Point Reyes National Seashore is one of the few places in the world and along the Pacific Coast where you can view Pacific Gray whales, Northern elephant seals, Harbor seals and California sea lions all in one place. Now you and five friends can experience the magic of seeing these marvelous marine mammals on a privately guided tour with Dr. Sarah G. Allen, Ocean Steward of the National Park Service's Pacific West Region.

Dr. Allen will take you to some of her favorite spots, including the Point Reyes Lighthouse, Chimney Rock, Elephant Seal Overlook, and Drakes Estero in search of the area's most abundant species. Dr. Allen is the co-author of the Field Guide to Marine Mammals of the Pacific Coast and has studied marine life from California to Antarctica for over 30 years. She will share interesting facts about the life cycles, physical features, adaptations and some of the quirky habits of these wonderful animals that may breathe like humans, but are suited to life in water. Your party may even get a chance to spot a rare sea otter, a pod of Orcas, or a variety of other whales including the largest mammal to ever live, the Blue whale. Your afternoon will end with a picnic lunch held at the Historic Lifeboat Station near Chimney Rock where the early Coast Guard risked life and limb to save passing ships, sailors and cargo from the rugged cliffs surrounding the Point Reyes Peninsula.

The winning bidder will also receive a series of six books from the University of California Press's California Natural History Guide Collection to start or to add to their home library. Your new book collection will include the following titles:

Field Guide to Marine Mammals of the Pacific Coast by Sarah G. Allen, Joe Mortenson and Sophie Webb

Natural History of the Point Reyes Peninsula by Jules G. Evens

Introduction to Water in California by David Carle

Introduction to California's Beaches and Coast by Gary Griggs

Natural History of San Francisco Bay by Ariel Rubissow Okamoto and Kathleen M. Wong

Introduction to Shore Wildflowers of California, Oregon and Washington by Philip A. Munz

This is the perfect winter adventure for families, teachers who want to get hands-on experience, or that marine mammal lover in your life, but all ages are encouraged to participate. Dive in, bid today!
