Item Description
Become a rock star with this privately guided geology tour of Point Reyes National Seashore with geologist John Karachewski for you and two friends.
Whether you are a budding or seasoned geologist, the park is an ideal destination for your next geological field trip and the story of Point Reyes is truly a study in motion – with slow, continental transformations and sudden, violent jolts that shake the Earth. Learn why the rocks of this craggy coast match those of the Tehachapi Mountains more than 310 miles to the south and how the discovery of plate tectonics helped geologists piece together the puzzle of Point Reyes.
John will take you to some of his favorite locations throughout the park to discover clues that tell the story of how this peninsula got here and explain other dynamic processes that have shaped Point Reyes. Your group will visit a number of locations including: the Bear Valley Visitor Center and Earthquake Trail that sit closest to the San Andreas Fault zone, the Point Reyes Lighthouse to see the Point Reyes Conglomerate, and Drakes Beach to view the sandstone cliffs, which remind locals and tourists alike of the white cliffs of Dover in Ireland.
John has conducted geology and environmental projects throughout the western United States from Colorado to Alaska and Midway Island. He received his Master’s degree from Western Washington University and his doctorate from the Colorado School of Mines. He works for California EPA in Berkeley. In spare time he enjoys taking photographs and teaching for Point Reyes National Seashore Association’s Field Institute.
Point Reyes National Seashore Association will also provide the group with a picnic lunch from our friends at the Palace Market and a copy for each participant of Geology of the San Francisco Bay Region, by Doris Sloan and photography by John to help you get better acquainted with our rich geologic history in the San Francisco Bay Area. A perfect outing or gift for the geology buff in your life.
