Item Description
Fire is always a hot topic! Is it good for the environment, or bad? How does fire enhance biodiversity? How is prescribed fire is used at Point Reyes? What strategic fuel breaks have been developed since the Vision Fire? How much defensible space do you need around your house? And when and where you can you have a fire at Point Reyes?
Bring up to nine of friends on a special walking tour of Point Reyes National Seashore with National Park Service (NPS) fire education specialist Jennifer Chapman, to explore these topics and more. Jennifer will share her extensive knowledge about fire ecology, the park's fire management program and even take you on a tour of the NPS’s new fire station complete with their own fire engine. Jennifer will guide your group in the field to visit areas burned in the Vision Fire, the largest wildlife fire Point Reyes as ever seen in modern times, and show you the dramatic changes in the landscape that are still noticeable almost 18 years later. Your guests will hear about the fascinating adaptations of species like the Bishop pine and how these even aged stands covering the Point Reyes landscape actually need fire to reproduce and how they tell the story of the striking changes yet to come. Jennifer will also highlight a variety of fire research that has been done in the park on topics such as rare plants, Sudden Oak death, mushrooms and mountain beavers. Time of year is flexible to accommodate the group, but april through June s recommended.
