Item Description
Traditional dovetail log homes began to emerge in the 1700s as a sturdy abode of our forefathers. Also known as American heritage and Appalachian log homes in the United States, the walls were traditionally made of logs hand hewn square into timbers and joined at the corners with a weather-resistant half-dovetail notch. This authentic design allows the weight of the building to pull the timbers tightly together for stout, tight joinery. Back then, the spaces between the timbers were filled or chinked with an array of clay, mortar, moss, or oakum. Today's chinking resources include varied thicknesses of foam backing rod and flexible latex caulking.
This auction items features an 8' x 8' dovetail structure built by students at North House Folk School, made of white pine timbers, and built in the Finnish half-dovetail design. Perfect for use as a sauna or storage shed in your garden, its rustic dovetail joinery and white pine timbers are reflective of the quality construction of those bygone days. The wall timbers are 4” thick and 8” tall. The roof joists extend 4 feet in front and 2 feet in back of the structure, offering a front porch for the building’s entry and a spot to keep firewood dry in back.
The building itself is currently assembled and available for viewing at North House. North House will fully disassemble the structure prior to pick up, and can assist with defining transportation options. Loading, transportation costs, and final assembly of the structure are the responsibility of the winning bidder.
