Item Description

The season of white awaits, and the woodstoves, masonry heater, and wood-fired brick oven on the North House campus all stand ready. What’s needed next? Fuel! In the north, there is nothing more iconic than split and stacked piles of birch logs, dried during the warm season and ready to make heat during the cooler months. Inside North House’s classrooms, the steady warmth of a woodstove, complemented by a hot mug of coffee or tea, just feels right, whether enjoyed during the Northern Fibers Retreat in February or the new Woodcarvers Week in March. The Birch by the Cord auction item will make sure the North House woodshed is always full.

From wood-fired pizza potlucks to cold mornings in January, North House makes use of approximately ten cords in a typical year. Many are purchased split-and-delivered locally from our neighbors. Starting last spring during our Volunteer & Service Learning Weekend, North House launched what we hope will be an annual tradition – a volunteer-led split-our-own project that stuffed the woodsheds beyond full in a single day.

Item Special Note

Buy It Now Bidder DOES NOT receive a cord of birch; this is a donation of a cord of birch to North House Folk School. This item is a tax-deductible contribution to North House Folk School, to help defray the cost of purchasing and preparing cords of birch wood to heat the school's buildings and wood-fired brick oven. All Birch By The Cord bidders will be mailed a copy of the classic book The Bread Builders, by Alan Scott and Daniel Wing.
