Item Description

Invite up to 12 fellow poetry lovers to join you for a special afternoon of reading and conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning Robert Hass, a poet of great eloquence, clarity, and force whose work is rooted in the landscapes of his native Northern California. The gathering will be hosted by the Mesa Refuge, a writers' retreat in Point Reyes Station, who will also provide a selection of wine and local cheeses for you and your guests. A signed copy of one of Bob's books will be offered to all guests donated by our friends at Point Reyes Books. The successful bidder can select one of the following dates to schedule this intimate party, including November 17, 24 or December 14, 2013; May 25 or June 8, 2014.

Robert Hass, in his tenure as United States Poet Laureate, 1995-97, spent two years battling American illiteracy, armed with the mantra, "imagination makes communities." His collection of poems entitled Time and Materials won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. In addition to being celebrated as a major American poet, Hass is also recognized as a leading translator, notably of the Polish poet Czeslaw Milosz and Japanese haiku masters Basho, Buson and Issa. Critics celebrate Hass’s own poetry for its clarity of expression, its conciseness, and its imagery, often drawn from everyday life. Bob is married to poet Brenda Hillman and teaches at the University of California at Berkeley. Hass's forthcoming publication, The Poetic Species, A Conversation with Edward O. Wilson and Robert Hass, will be published in March 2014.

Mesa Refuge is an intimate writers’ retreat perched on a bluff overlooking the Point Reyes National Seashore's restored Giacomini Wetlands and Inverness Ridge.  It is one of the few retreat centers in that United States that supports people writing about nature, economics and social equity. Since 1998, Mesa Refuge has granted residencies to over 500 writers.
