About the Artist

Philippe Noyer was born June 28, 1917 in Lyon (central France). After taking a course at the prestigious Ecole des Roches, he went to the Beaux Arts (Fine Arts) School of Lyon, then decided to go to Paris to attend the Paul Colin School of Art.

Noyer began his painting career in 1943. It was that year he met a famous Paris art dealer, Emmanuel David. David instantly offered him a contract with the elite Drouant-David Gallery of Paris. Noyer was soon among the most sought after portraitists of Paris and the high society of London.

During his relationship with the Drouant-David Gallery, Noyer made a friend and contact in the United States that he gives credit for a great deal of his sucess. This person was Mr. Robert Goldstein, the former President of the 20th Century Fox movie company. The two met in 1949. Robert Goldstein purchsased 20 Noyer pieces and was so pleased with his purchase that he gave pieces to his friends, including the legendary Samuel Goldwyn, who then made Noyer's name known on the West Coast.

In the years to follow, Noyer was asked to paint the portraits of many well known stars including Elizabeth Taylor, Dinah Shore, Jean Wallace and the children of actor Alan Ladd. Over time he put his career as a portraitist to the side so he could dedicate himself to the petite, sophisticated, mystical ladies who had taken the place of children as his choice of subject.

Noyer sums up his art in these words: "My paintings are what they appear to be, nothing more, nothing less. Some are serious, some are not. But I have always painted what I have felt."
