On the last day of a 1044km expedition along the River Gambia we stopped at a village in The Gambia called Mandinari.We went to procure food from a family compound when we came across a group of children each taking it turns to wear a Mardi Gras mask.

Jason Florio is a British photographer and writer based in New York City. He has been covering global stories on political issues, cultures, and travel for the past 15 years for publications including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Independent on Sunday, and Newsweek. For the past 5 years he has been collaborating on stories with his wife, writer and producer Helen Jones-Florio. His work has been exhibited widely in the USA, Europe and China and is held in a number of museums and private collections. He is a proud fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
