On the last day of a 1044km expedition along the River Gambia we stopped at a village in The Gambia called Mandinari.We went to procure food from a family compound when we came across a group of children each taking it turns to wear a Mardi Gras mask.

He has been covering global stories on political issues, cultures, and travel for the past 15 years for publications including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Independent on Sunday, and Newsweek.
