Item Description
Les Charbonniers (The Coal Dealers)
This Operetta was written by Philippe Gille and music by Jules Coste. It was performed at Theatre des Varietes on April 4, 1877. Frederic Regamey designed the poster illustrations.
This poster was a part of a collection gathered by Lucy Broido called French Opera Posters 1868 - 1930. It included 53 posters, including 32 in full color. Broido states:
“Adolphe Dupuis (left-hand illustration), a high tenor, was a leading
star of French operetta, having created the male leads in Offenbach’s La Bella Hélène and La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein. The Career of Anna Judic started somewhat later, but was also illustrious. The verse on the left says: “what a hulk of a man! Any scrape with him would give you the jitters. If you came to grips with him, you could never get off undamaged!” And on the right: “Washing up on Sundays, what a darn shame! A little black on your mug makes your white
teeth stand out so prettily!”
In this one-act operetta, a male and female coal dealer who do not get along with each other change their minds and fall in love after they have had a good wash.
The illustrations in black portraying Dupuis and Judic were taken from the collection of L‘Eclipse. The poster itself, in blue letters on lighter blue paper, was used on the railroad to advertise publications from the operetta.”
