Item Description
Photography By Angela Cejada
“Troubled Water” is a physical representation of an emotional struggle. While experiencing trauma or depression, people often feel paralyzed by their suffering. Similarly, being immersed in cold water physically cripples the body. Submerging the face in cold water colder than 70ºF triggers the Mammalian Diving Reflex which slows the heart rate and restricts blood flow to the extremities in order to increase blood and oxygen supply to the vital organs. This protects the body by putting it into energy saving mode to maximize the time it can stay under water. By trapping my subjects in this experience through the use of photography, their stresses feel inescapable.
However, in the same way that these images demonstrate struggle, they are about survival. This reflex is a survival instinct in which the body tries to save itself when a person cannot consciously react. It is about the deep desire to fight for life, even in the worst of times.
