Item Special Note

Amethyst and Quartz  are made from the same mineral compound, silicon dioxide.

The purple variety is amethyst, and when clear, the same mineral is known as quartz.

Where does the purple color in amethyst come from? "It is the presence of manganese in quartz that produces the purple color." source:http://www.bestcrystals.com/amethyst.html

Amethyst:

"Amethyst is the birth stone for February." source: http://amethyst-meaning.com/

"Amethyst is a meditative and calming stone which works in the emotional, spiritual, and physical planes to provide calm, balance, patience, and peace." source: http://meanings.crystalsandjewelry.com/amethyst/

"The name Amethyst derives from the Greek word ametusthos, meaning “not intoxicated,” and comes from an ancient legend. The wine god Bacchus, angry over an insult and determined to avenge himself decreed the first person he should meet would be devoured by his tigers. The unfortunate mortal happened to be a beautiful maiden named Amethyst on her way to worship at the shrine of Diana. As the ferocious beasts sprang, she sought the protection of the goddess and was saved by being turned into a clear, white crystal. Bacchus, regretting his cruelty, poured the juice of his grapes over the stone as an offering, giving the gem its lovely purple hue." source: http://www.crystalvaults.com/crystal-encyclopedia/amethyst

Quartz:

Clear Quartz, pure silicon dioxide, is also called Rock Crystal or Ice Crystal, from the Greek word "krystallos", meaning "ice", because crystal was believed to be water frozen so hard it could never thaw.source: http://www.crystalvaults.com/crystal-encyclopedia/quartz

"Quartz is a stone of clarity which dispels negativity and clears away negative energy. It can be used to purify and clarify on the spiritual, mental, and physical planes. It is powerfully protective because of these properties. Quartz enhances spiritual growth, spirituality and wisdom. Because it clarifies thought processes and emotions, it can increase inspiration and creativity." source: http://meanings.crystalsandjewelry.com/quartz/
