Jason Hancock received his instruction at Cleveland Institute of Art, Wheaton College (BA), and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (BFA). Jason has shown extensively at the Attleboro Arts Museum since 1994. He was invited to have a solo exhibition at the New Bedford Whaling Museum during the fall of 2012/winter of 2013. Jason lives with his wife and son and works in Plainville, MA.
“Wavescape” was part of my “Among the Waves and Amid the Vortex” solo exhibit at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in the Fall and Winter of 2012-13. As part of this exhibit, its inspiration was drawn from elaborations on Herman Melville’s epic “Moby Dick.” From the novel I centered on the tumultuous nature of the whaling seas, the whaling life and the whales’ powerful nature.
“Wavescape” is an exploration of a singular aspect of the ocean. Using my method of mixing oil paint and colored plaster to create a dynamic “flow” of color, texture and energy, the piece illustrates a cresting wave that is defined by the hand-painted silver bubbles that follow the under painting’s lead.
As always in my work, chance and control, opposing forces in general, are summoned to create a dialogue of greater understanding.
In addition to the New Bedford show, “Wavescape” won the Jury Prize in the “Liquid’ Exhibited at the Next Door Gallery, Mansfield, Massachusetts in the summer of 2013.
