Nancy Aleo is Professor & Chairperson, Studio Foundation Department at Massachusetts College of Art & Design. She serves as President of the Board of Trustees at the Attleboro Arts Museum (AAM). Exhibitions: What Goes Around, AAM; On the Threshold, AAM; Selections 11 at Massachusetts College of Art & Design; Galerie Le Cabannon and Galerie Aqui Siam Ben, Vallauris, France; Celebrating Diversity, AAM. Sguardi Sonori, Napoli, Italy included a painting from Aleo’s Sound Collection Series.
This mixed media, red cochineal/black sumi ink drawing from my Santa Lucia Map Series was created during a residency in Barcelona, Spain.
Item Description: This drawing was inspired by a painting I saw in Oaxaca, Mexico depicting Santa Lucia with her “eyes on a plate”. I investigated the various stories surrounding this surreal and haunting image. Through a personal, subjective exploration, I considered the concept of Santa Lucia as a metaphor for “seeing” – physically, conceptually, and spiritually.
My process can be described as intuitive. Inspirations are drawn from memory, and guided by experience.
