Item Description

Sandpaper, Wood, rubber, brass

16" x 12" x 2"

Ellen Gibson has been a sculptor and woodworker for 40 years and has shown her work nationally. She received a Master’s degree in sculpture from Massachusetts College of Art. Her work ranges from small to life sized using multiple materials and techniques and consists of sculptures, furniture and timber framed structures. She has a studio in Roslindale, MA.

Item Description: Materials have a narrative quality and I choose them according to feel, weight, patina, history and function. I work in several series at one time and use objects and materials from my collections of “stuff.”

The FAN series came from finding many large folding fans in an old family house. They were made from many different fabrics, and woods, bones and tassels and were different sizes. They were made to keep you cool.

I had a collection of used sand paper discs that held a history of use in their grits. Folded, they became the starting point for several in the group of following FANS. When waved they caught the air and cooled it. The series is expanding as the interpretation of the fan changes.
