Victor Gabriel Gilbert (1847 - 1935) is a well-recognized painter of French genre scenes. Despite a lack of formal training, he quickly came to the attention of the Parisian public, and, in his late-20s, he was exhibited in the 1873 and 1874 Salon Exhibitions. It was during the mid-1870s that Gilbert became close friends with Pierre Martin, one of the chief supporters of the impressionist movement, including Monet, Van Gogh, Cézanne, and Gauguin. Martin acquired works by Victor Gilbert, and, through this support and recognition, Gilbert was able to devote all his time to his painting, focusing on what are today his very sought-after street market, vendor, and cafe scenes.
