About the Artist
Samara Johnson graduated from Michigan State University in 2011 with an art degree specializing in photography. She has had a lifetime love of art and personal use of creativity as a mode of self-expression and healing. She has also been practicing yoga since high school and is a true believer in the benefits of yoga and mindfulness for overall health, especially as a key part of treating eating disorders. Samara is passionate about raising awareness and providing education recourses for the community at large. Samara has worked as the Director of Development for the Inner Door Foundation. She planned the first dual-purpose event to raise awareness of eating disorders and create increased recognition for eating disorders by having an art-based event, which also highlights the thriving art scene in Detroit. Art is used in the event to call upon the automatic subconscious stereotyping that takes place in our society – by breaking these stigmas it allows an expansion of values and behaviors towards that particular group as well as allowing those with the disorder to feel less separated and more willing to seek help or help others. Her goal is to assist in changing the way eating disorders are understood and raise support for those who are suffering or know someone who is.
