Item Description
Janet Harrison has been thrilled to be a student in UNM’s Art Education Program. Her concentration has been in the course entitled Clay in the Classroom taught by Lin Johnson, who has been instrumental in her evolution from beginner to artist. Janet has shown works in UNM’s Masley Gallery and Masley Gallery II.
This unusual textured piece is made from three different clay bodies -- white stoneware, anasazi and terra cotta. It was rolled into a slab using a lace curtain to give the incised pattern. After it was bisque fired, it was stained with red iron oxide and then put in a cone 5 kiln for firing. The colors are reminiscent of our magnificent Southwest landscape. The (11.5" x 14.5", 1/4" thick) plaque is ready for hanging.
The artist has taken many classes through the UNM Art Education department and has exhibited at the UNM Masley Galleries. She is greatly indebted to her professor Lin Johnson and fellow students.
The Art Education Program (ARTE) at the University of New Mexico prepares art professionals to meet the needs of diverse populations in the state and nation. The undergraduate program educates students toward becoming reflective art teachers who can encourage students to create artworks in response to life experiences. The graduate program provides students with the opportunity to investigate making and studying art in cultural, social, and historical contexts. They believe that studying and making imagery is a life-long pursuit for art professionals working in our visually complex society.
The Masley Art Gallery, under the direction of the Art Education faculty, exhibits the work of art education students and faculty members. Art teachers, school-age students, and other community members are invited to display their work for special shows.
