Item Description
"Mrs. Delaney and Her Circle" edit. Mark Laird and Alicia Weisberg-Roberts (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2009).
"Mrs. Delaney and Her Circle" is the catalogue that accompanied the exhibition of her botanical artistry at the Yale Center for British Art and at Sir John Soane's Museum, London. Mary Delaney, a contemporary to George II and a friend of the king and queen, was an avid gardener, artist, and letter-writer who also created botanical collages or "paper mosaics." Already in her seventies, Mrs. Delaney created unique hand-cut floral designs out of paper, made through her own inventive methods. The catalogue discusses how she used her craft activities to cultivate bonds of friendship and negotiate complex, interlinked social networks throughout a long life passed in artistic, aristocratic, and court circles in Georgian England and Ireland.
