Item Description
This is a charming little antique piece. It is the size and shape of a large, old-fashioned cash register.
Item Special Note
Needs repair, but is complete with all pieces, even the drawer key! Day, date and month are on little canvas scrolls that can be turned by lifting the top. This piece is designed so that when the bottom (locking) drawer (key included) is pulled out, the tambour door opens, revealing the slots for storage of stationary or mail. A writing surface folds out, supported on the open drawer, and reveals ink wells, a tray for pens or pencils, a secret compartment under the pencil tray, and another small compartment with lid.
This item was purchased in Europe by my neighbors decades ago and was given to my father many years ago to repair. Dad repaired it, but with time, the material that he used to repair the tambour door has deteriorated, so it needs repair again. Fortunately, the piece has some strategically placed screws that allow disassembly for repair.
The wood finish is in good condition, although I believe that it was probably refinished by my father, so not the original finish. It appears to be oak and is quite a lovely conversation piece, as well as potentially functional! For a person who is handy, or with access to someone versed in furniture restoration, this is a lovely little item. I actually used to use it to keep my bills in.
