EMILY ROLES –
This violin was painted for the West Virginia Youth Symphony by local WV artist, Emily Roles.
Emily Roles: I have always lived in West Virginia. I have been painting sheep on hillsides for years. My ideas for the painting of the violin developed this summer. On June 20, I arrived back home from a trip to Tuscany. For the next two days, I celebrated the West Virginia sesquicentennial birthday with the CLOG play “Civil War,” lectures at the Cultural Center and fireworks at the Capitol. On July 3, I heard Grant Cooper’s arrangement of WV Hills with the WV symphony at the 4th of July concert at the Municipal Auditorium. I spent a week at the Chautauqua Institute from July 7 to 14 with the theme for lectures “1863”. During the week, I again heard Grant Cooper conduct his WV Hills arrangement with the Chautauqua Symphony. All summer I have prepared for a show at Art Emporium, “West Virginia Revisited”. The subject of the last painting I did was rolling hills and sheep that I named, “Oh Those Hills With Sheep” Can I say when I painted the violin....Oh Those Hills With Sheep just came off my brush?
