Item Description

Artist: Geoffrey Raymond

Title: The Annotated Uncle Sam

Artist Statement: I've invited the public to physically write on my art for years, always with the same effect: Once the work is dense with commentary it transforms into a mash-up of sculpture, painting, social commentary, history and graffiti; oral history recorded with Sharpies; an artistic collaboration between me and several hundred people who either live in Troy or wished they did.

Artist Biography: Geoffrey Raymond is an American painter. He is best known for painting embattled Wall Street CEOs then exhibiting them in a public place and inviting pedestrians who pass by to annotate his work with Sharpies. His painting style is described as a Jackson Pollock/Chuck Close fusion.Because of the physical incorporation of public commentary on the face of his works, his Wall Street series expands the notion of traditional portraiture and becomes both painted depictions and historical documentation of the 2008 financial crisis and beyond. Mr. Raymond and his work have been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, on NPR, CNN and the Today Show, to name but a few.
