SERGE BETSEN Professional rugby XV player Serge Betsen was a flanker, for Biarritz Olympique Team, for the French Team, and for London Wasps.

He received his first cap with France on 22nd March 1997 against Italy. In 2000, he took part in his first 6 Nations tournament.

Nicknamed the "Grim Reaper" or “Shears" because of his famous tackles and fast starts, he is considered to be the best tackler in the world by many rugby experts and is feared by all his opponents.

He was voted best player of the French championship in 2002 by l’Oscar Midi Olympique, in 2004 he was nominated by the IRB for the title of best World player.

Selected in rugby seven national and regional team  Cote Basque for tournaments in Punta Del Este, Madrid and Paris (between1993 and 2000).

In 2003 he published a book, Faire le soleil, and in 2005 wrote the foreword to Des filles en Ovalie by Jacques Cortie.

Serge set up the Serge Betsen Academy in 2004 to:

- help underprivileged children in Cameroon

- use the teaching of rugby as a vehicle for social integration

- give access to education and healthcare for hundreds of underprivileged children in Yaounde and its suburbs

Over more than 9 years, Serge Betsen Academy has opened five centres in Cameroon. The work in the centres of the Serge Betsen Academy is based on the winning combination:

Rugby – Education - Health

Rugby trainings are offered weekly by experienced coaches and educators trained in our schools in France.

After school, tutoring sessions are held in classrooms run by the SBA's staff and volunteers.

Access to drop-in clinics is offered where 500 young girls and boys and girls are provided with treatments and vaccinations as well as hygiene awareness and health education.
