Item Description

Photographer Roberto Rosales was born in San Salvador, El Salvador and remembers Dia de los Muertes as  a day when they celebrated the spirits of passed loved ones.  Through conventional film photography he has been depicting the faces that make this celebration such a unique event in Albuquerque’s South Valley.  The image he has donated represents the spirits of souls long gone.

When Roberto Rosales was forced to leave his country in 1980 at the age of 11 because of the civil war, he and his brother moved to Maryland where he attended school and began a new life.  He graduated from JFK High School where he began taking photography.  He graduated then from the University of New Mexico  and returned to El Salvador where he conducted photo workshops for newspaper staffers.  Upon returning to the states he became staff photographer for the Albuquerque Journal and eventually the photo editor.

The Art Education Program (ARTE) at the University of New Mexico prepares art professionals to meet the needs of diverse populations in the state and nation.  The undergraduate program educates students toward becoming reflective art teachers who can encourage students to create artworks in response to life experiences.  The graduate program provides students with the opportunity to investigate making and studying art in cultural, social, and historical contexts.  They believe that studying and making imagery is a life-long pursuit for art professionals working in our visually complex society.

The Masley Art Gallery, under the direction of the Art Education faculty, exhibits the work of art education students and faculty members.  Art teachers, school-age students, and other community members are invited to display their work for special shows.
